Here’s a widely accepted definition of ‘employability’:

A set of achievements - skills, understanding, and personal attributes that make graduates more likely to gain employment and be successful in their chosen occupations, which benefits themselves, the workforce, the community, and the economy.

Professor Mantze Yorke (2004)

The University of Edinburgh opines that employability is not the same as gaining a graduate job, rather it is about the capacity to function successfully in a role and be able to move between occupations, thus remaining employable throughout one’s life.

Employability is:

  • A lifelong process
  • Applies to all students, (UGs, PGs) whatever their situation, course or mode of study
  • Complex and involves a number of different areas that interlink
  • About helping students to develop the knowledge, skills, and attributes, which will enable them to be successful not just in employment but in their wider life
  • About making the components of employability explicit to students to support their lifelong learning

Employability is not:

  • Replacing academic rigour and standards
  • Necessarily about adding additional modules into the curriculum
  • Just about preparing students for employment
  • The sole responsibility of the careers department
  • Something than can be quantified by any single measure

Employability doesn’t mean just getting a job. It is about earning a fulfilling job.

In India, many people are able to find employment, but are stuck in a bad job, or a job that does not pay well, or perhaps a job for which one is overqualified. This is called underemployment.
